Nine slightly unfamiliar positions, and one technique: noticing your muscles and joints as you hold each one, and rearranging your body, in real time, into the structure that suits it.
Your body holds itself in a particular structure: every joint at some angle, every muscle at some level of tension, all of it holding the whole shape together. You assembled that structure yourself, over years, without meaning to. If you're in pain, it isn't the ideal one. You can feel that it could be better, which is why you're interested in releasing tension and aligning your joints in the first place.
Restructuring is noticing the structure you're in right now, feeling what's going on in it, and then rearranging it yourself. A teacher can point at how your body looks from the outside. Only you can feel what's happening inside your joints, so this is something you learn to do on your own.
Each position in this course puts a little stress on your body, just enough that you can clearly feel what isn't right. Then you spend the session changing it.
“Balance and alignment aren’t just about stacking your joints in a straight line. They apply in every position you can put your body in.”
The method grew out of my own twelve years of muscular tension and pain, and ideas from the movement teachers Egwin Ertl and Eero Westerberg.
Nine positions and a bonus balance board session. Each is a follow-along video of about ten minutes, filmed vertically so it plays full screen on your phone.
Feet a little apart, one slightly in front. Your first honest look at the structure you're standing in, and the first chance to change it.
One leg up on a chair, a hand on a support until your balance is truly yours. There's a lot going on in this one.
For anyone who sits at a desk. Sitting doesn't cause back pain; the way you're arranged while you sit can, and that can change.
Alignment isn't only standing straight. Here you learn to stay aligned while you lean back.
Looks easy, isn't. Freeing the hips sideways, so lifting a foot off the floor becomes effortless.
Foot on the opposite ankle, like tree pose. If it isn't awkward, you aren't pushing enough.
Kneeling, knee and hip at right angles with a little turnout, then exploring every position from there.
Feet a bit wider than you usually have them, as wide as feels comfortable, and a lot happens.
One leg far forward. A chance to see how far you've come since session one.
A bonus session to take what you've built further, and the start of the next phase.
Instant access to all ten sessions, to watch on your phone, tablet or computer, as many times as you like.

At eighteen I suddenly had pain all over my body, and for twelve years nothing the doctors and physiotherapists gave me really changed it. What finally did was slow, conscious movement: paying close attention to my muscles and joints, and letting my body rearrange itself.
Balance and Restructuring is that idea applied to balance and alignment. It’s the course I’d give anyone who has started to release their tension and wants their body to settle into a better structure for good.
